National Prescription Drug programs address a vital public safety and public health issue. More than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Each day, approximately, 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

To help combat this growing threat to our nation’s children, the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office is hosting Operation Take Back on Saturday October 29, 2011 and the American Medicine Chest Challenge (AMCC) on Saturday November 12, 2011. Residents can also find a local collection site onwww.nationaltakebackday.com and www.americanmedicinechestchallenge.comor dispose of their medicine at home, following the guidelines on the sites. The drugs collection program is a free, anonymous, no questions asked initiative that prevents pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.
