Murray, KY: CCASAP, CCSO to hold Medicine Chest Challenge

Posted: Friday, November 11, 2011 9:11 am

The Calloway County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention and the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office will sponsor the 2011 American Medicine Chest Challenge in Murray this weekend.

Lauren Ballantyne, network coordinator for CCASAP, says anyone that wants to help get potentially dangerous unused or expired over-the-counter or prescription drugs out of medicine cabinets and away from youngsters should bring them to the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office on Olive Street Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Those who participate will be put in a drawing for a gas card,” Ballantyne said. “This initiative is an awareness campaign that will challenge Murray and Calloway County residents to take the Five-Step American Medicine Chest Challenge.”

Elements of the challenge include:

• Take inventory of prescription and over-the-counter medications in the home.

• Lock up the medicine chest.

• Dispose of unused, unwanted and expired medicine through the program.

• Take medication exactly as prescribe by a doctor or as printed on the label.

• Talk to children about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
