Want to find out where you can safely dispose of expired or unwanted prescription medications legally and safely in Pasco County? How about when you’re on vacation out of town or even out of state?

A new mobile app that was recently rolled out by the American Medicine Chest Challenge can help you out.

The AMCC Rx Drop app, designed for smart phones and other similar devices, connects users with the locations of permanent prescription drug disposal sites in more than 40 states. It also features a number of sites right here in Pasco County, which is why the Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention of Pasco County and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office are promoting its use.

The new app gives “easy access to find a local medication disposal site,” said Chrissie Parris, coalition coordinator for ASAP of Pasco. “(It) will help reduce access to unused medications while bringing more awareness in securing and monitoring medications in the home, especially controlled substances. This app will be a great asset in preventing overdose deaths and pill abuse in our families and community."

The Generic Pharmaceutical Association is sponsoring the app, which is available on both the Appleand Android stores at no charge.

“With the support of ASAP and the desire of the citizens of Pasco County, Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco and the members of the Pasco Sheriff's Office have aggressively attacked the epidemic of prescription pill abuse,” said Pasco County Cpl. Alan Wilkett in a press release on the app’s launch.

AMCC is a nonprofit public health initiative with partnerships in all 50 states.
