Police station welcomes unused prescriptions every day

Over the past two years, the Kinnelon Police Department has participated in the Partnership for a Drug Free NJ's and the Drug Enforcement Administration's take back prescription drug days. These popular programs allowed residents to purge their medicine cabinets of prescription or over-the-counter medications a couple times a year.

On July 16, the Kinnelon Police Department put into service a MedReturn Collection Unit, which is located in the police lobby. Similar to a mailbox, this unit was purchased for the community for $4,000 by Morris County Prevention in Key. The unit, which weighs approximately 200 pounds and is bolted to the lobby floor, allows residents to purge their medicine cabinets 365 days a year.

Now between the hours of 8 a.m. and 12 a.m., seven days a week, people can come to police headquarters and dispose of any unused or expired medication into the unit. The unit is secured and will be emptied on a regular basis by the Morris County Sheriff's Department. The box will not accept any needles.

All are encouraged to utilize this unit, and non-residents are welcome. Those with questions can contact the Kinnelon Police Department at 973-838-5400.
