Proper Medication Disposal

POSTED: Wednesday, December 22, 2010

The American Medicine Chest Challenge urges you to get rid of unused, unwanted and expired prescriptions.

Whether it’s those antibiotics you forgot to take, or old cold capsules-- many medicine cabinets contain unused or expired medications. Do you toss them in the trash? Flush them down the toilet?

If improperly discarded, drugs can contaminate our environment.

While most medicines can be thrown in the household trash, you need to insure no one can access them:

Mix medicine with something that will disguise it or make it unappealing, like kitty litter or coffee grounds. Then place it in a sealed container or plastic bag.

Many believe it’s okay to flush drugs down the toilet. But the same medicines that help humans can harm fish.

You can also call your town’s trash and recycling service to see if they have a community drug take-back program for residents to dispose of unused drugs.
